ATTC kickstarting careers in electrical

Australian Trade Training College (ATTC) student Steele Perkins, 15, has made an impressive start to his electrical career, graduating from his Electrotechnology course as the youngest in his class.

The Burpengary State High School student’s commitment, enthusiasm, and cooperative spirit earned him ATTC’s Future Pathways Award.

Initially drawn to mechanics due to his passion for cars, Steele discovered his love for electrical work after participating in ATTC’s Trade Taster program at age 14. “I’ve always been interested in trades, but the Trade Taster program really ignited my passion for electrical work,” Steele shared.

Despite being the youngest in his cohort, Steele quickly found his feet. “It was a bit daunting at first but getting to know everyone made it all good,” he said.

A year later, Steele has graduated and secured a school-based apprenticeship with local company JMN Electrical, where he’ll gain hands-on experience one day a week for the next two years.

Reflecting on his time at ATTC, part of the IntoWork Group, Steele praised the trainers and the program’s quality. “I’d absolutely recommend ATTC to other kids in school who want to explore a trade while still learning,” he said.

Jakob Mathews, Head of Department for VET in Schools, couldn’t be prouder of Steele’s achievements. “Steele’s dedication and enthusiasm have been exceptional. We’re incredibly proud of his progress and the initiative he’s shown in securing this apprenticeship. He’s a fantastic role model for other young people considering a career in the trades.”

Steele’s advice for aspiring tradespeople is refreshingly straightforward: “Be yourself, don’t be an idiot, and make sure to complete your assessments on time. That’s about it.”

Steele graduated alongside 115 ATTC students who completed courses in Construction, Automotive, Engineering, and Electrotechnology in November. As part of his Future Pathways award, Steele received a Makita drill kit, which was donated by Total Tools.
