Illawarra school leavers are being offered a head start in the booming construction industry, with a free trade skills program being rolled out in the region.
With recent statistics revealing New South Wales would need to build 75 per cent more homes in the next five years to keep up with the need for housing1, demand for qualified trades people will continue to grow, opening up lucrative and secure career opportunities in the construction sector.
HTN (Part of the IntoWork Group) in partnership with Illawarra ITeC, is offering school leavers a head start in the industry with a free pre-apprenticeship program that will give participants hands on experience and qualifications.
During the six week Construction Pathway Program, participants will learn how to operate tools of the trade, get hands on experience on a construction project, complete Workplace Health and Safety modules, and get opportunities to link in with local employers and apprenticeship opportunities. They will also get their own tradies starter kit including safety boots, gloves, hi-vis, glasses and ear protection.
HTN Field Officer for Apprentice Services Glenn Maybury said the program is perfect for school leavers thinking about their next move, “Undertaking a pre-apprenticeship in construction offers a unique opportunity for individuals to gain hands-on experience and develop valuable skills that will set them up for a successful career in the industry,” Mr Maybury said.
“Through on-the-job training and mentorship, participants can learn from experienced professionals, acquire the practical skills needed to excel in the field and can get a taste of what a career in construction would look like and with the demand for skilled workers in the construction industry, there is plenty of job opportunities for school-leavers.”
