IntoWork Group’s latest initiative, EmpowHer, designed to help at-risk women, has achieved considerable success in overcoming employment barriers linked to family and domestic violence (FDV). The program’s pilot run recently concluded in Mount Gambier, providing vital support specifically tailored for women challenged by their circumstances.
The EmpowHer program was formed through a collaboration between IntoWork Group businesses IntoJobs, iTFE, and Mas National. These organisations have united their expertise to create an initiative that addresses both vocational and non-vocational hurdles that hinder employability. Mount Gambier was chosen for the pilot due to its high number of female Workforce Australia participants affected by FDV.
The initiative was crafted to deal with deep-seated issues such as low self-esteem and uncertainty about engaging with employment. Over several days in November, participants attended sessions focusing on well-being, which included both accredited and non-accredited training. These were conducted under the guidance of iTFE’s Growth & New Programs Manager, Kirsty Morrissey, who has over 20 years of experience in women’s advocacy.
“EmpowHer is crucial because it addresses the deep-seated issues that often prevent women from entering or re-entering the workforce. Many of these women have faced significant trauma and need a supportive environment to rebuild their confidence and skills,” Kirsty said.
The programme features a comprehensive suite of support services. It incorporates allied health services from the Mas/IntoWork Allied Health team and personal and self-development workshops from iTFE. There were also local community connections and guest speakers facilitated by IntoJobs. These elements aim to inspire the women involved, provide strong role models, and surround them with a comprehensive support network.
Participants in the pilot program have reported a significant boost in confidence and have praised the knowledge, skills, and community connections gained through EmpowHer. Laughter, solid support, and open discussions on challenging topics helped the women build essential skills and establish meaningful friendships.

EmpowHer’s success in Mount Gambier is sparking a planned expansion to more locations in the future. The aim is to reach a broader audience of women who could benefit from such support.
Additionally, IntoJobs is currently exploring partnerships with local businesses to establish job placement opportunities for those who have completed the program. The goal is to create a sustainable pathway that transitions women from facing substantial personal challenges to securing meaningful employment. This initiative not only supports individual women but also contributes positively to the broader community by enabling social and economic participation.
