Jaymie Richards lives in the small regional community of Mount Mary, about 145 kilometres from Adelaide. With a population of just 36, local employment opportunities are limited and housing challenges can make it difficult for young people to secure a stable future.
While determined to build a life in the region he knows and loves, finding the right opportunity wasn’t easy. With support from IntoJobs (delivered by Mas), Jaymie remained focused on achieving his employment goals.
That opportunity came when a full-time Grader Operator position was advertised with Mid Murray Council in nearby Morgan, around 24 kilometres away. IntoJobs Mobile Employment Consultant Jennifer Davis recognised the role as a great fit and encouraged Jaymie to apply.
After successfully securing an interview, Jaymie was offered the position, subject to meeting several licensing and compliance requirements. While he already held an HR licence, he needed a Synchromesh accreditation, along with a Skid Steer licence, Loader ticket, First Aid certificate, Police Check and Working with Children Check before he could commence employment.
Jennifer worked closely with both Jaymie and the employer to help make the opportunity a reality. She arranged the required training courses, booked Jaymie into the next available First Aid course and provided a fuel voucher to assist with travel costs.
“Jaymie was determined to do whatever was needed to secure the role,” Jennifer said. “Once Mid Murray Council agreed to a start date conditional on the required licences and checks being completed, we worked quickly to put everything in place. It was a great example of how practical support can help remove barriers and create real opportunities.”
Jaymie successfully commenced employment with Mid Murray Council in May 2024 and has continued to thrive in the role ever since.
More than two years later, he remains employed with the council and has achieved a significant personal milestone: purchasing his own home.
“Seeing Jaymie still employed more than two years later and able to buy his own home is incredibly rewarding,” Jennifer said. “Employment can change so much. It can provide stability, security and the confidence to plan for the future.”
Jaymie’s story highlights the life-changing impact of secure employment and the importance of strong partnerships between jobseekers, employers and support services. Through perseverance, encouragement and practical assistance, he has overcome significant barriers to create a brighter and more secure future for himself.
